Soon after Fela arrived at 9:30, he went upstairs to use the loo. Afterwards he went to sit on the red settee, and I gave him a present to open. It was a new cap – black with a red logo. I sewed his name into the label. Fela was happy to play with the tongue drum whilst listening to John Coltrane. After his snack, I offered him the choice between playing cards, colouring and cutting out. I gave Fela 2 x print outs of the alphabet letters to colour then cut out. He chose yellow for the letters in the first print out then blue for the letters in the second one. I wonder if these are two of his favourite colours.
Fela wore his new cap to Green Door after lunch from 13:30- 14:30. this was the earliest session we could get, but it was quite busy with people. This is why the morning sessions are to be preferred. Fela was signing for ‘cooking’, ‘butter’, ‘egg’, ‘pasta’ and ‘pesto’ which is a new sign he has just created. Fela insisted on doing a fourth then fifth lap for a total of 50 minutes. Fela was signing for table, saying ‘t’, then pointing to the grass so I took this to mean that he wanted to eat on the bench as he did in Grove Park, Birmingham last Wednesday. Fela is doing fantastically well at pronouncing the first syllable of the word.
When we returned home, I prepared a fruit salad with some cherry yogurt for Fela’s snack. After his tea, he also requested a lolly. He wanted me to say ‘lolly’ and not use the word ‘ice’. I prompted Fela to change his clothes and remove his socks. We then practised the makaton signs for the week – ‘signs of summer’. Fela really seemed to respond to this as he was saying the words clearly and initiating the signs from the videos before I did the sign.
Just as we were about to leave, Fela’s bandage slid off so Michael offered to change it. We arrived at Fela’s home just after 16:30. Zoe was there, and we had a detailed handover with her before Dan arrived. He was in a good mood when we left, and had just requested that Zoe do the board with him.
