13/04/2021 – Morning & Afternoon shift – carla cornelius

Shift Report:

Considering Fela only had 3.5 hours sleep, he was calm when I arrived and finishing off his breakfast. We decided not to go ahead with the Aldi shop because it was a red alert. Teresa kindly offered to do the shopping for us after work. We delayed going out until she returned. Fela was happy to do a neighbourhood walk and put the TEACCH card on the board. I checked with him after Teresa had left and shopping unpacked. He was still happy to do the walk.

We set off at 11:30. Fela walked really well and happily for one hour 10 minutes past Holden Pool all the way to the end of the path on Birches Head Road, then back.

On arrival home, he stayed in the loo for a long while after being changed – it was as if he was too tired to get off. Lunch was late at 13:15. I allowed Claire and Barbra to go to the Butcher’s and have a drive for Barbra to get used to the car. After they left, I did the board with Fela offering him rest on the settee or story. He was happy to get on the settee but before I could get the book he was fast asleep. He slept on and off from 14:00 – 15:45 but probably for less than an hour although he was lying down all the time. fire crackling piano jazz was playing on youtube. Fela seemed to find this soothing and had it on all afternoon and evening as this was his preference.

Whilst in the staff room, I showed Barbra how to use the TV and get on to youtube where we looked up makaton signs and practised them – for colours, animals and emotions. I dashed home for 15 minutesĀ  to fetch some items. When I returned Claire was reading the ‘Large family’ stories to Fela which he chose. I went upstairs to do some chores, then came down and gave Fela a manicure which he thoroughly enjoyed.

After Barbra left, and the manicure was complete, I read the prayer for today to Fela and offered him some writing which he was happy to do. He did a great job and was concentrating very well, and trying to follow instructions. I read it to him again, and we sang the prayer which is also a hymn – ‘Father I place into your hands’.

After dinner, Fela became agitated for around 20 minutes after taking himself to the loo in a huff. He sounded as if he was slapping his forehead but we left him to settle before talking to him. When Claire checked on him, he had done a bowel movement. He was a lot calmer afterwards. We enticed him out of the bathroom with the promise of a DVD. He chose ‘101 Dalmatians’ but it was clear he was having some senior moments as he watched it.

At 20:45, the film was paused to prompt Fela to the loo. At the time of writing he is splashing and humming merrily in the bath.
