Fela enjoyed his breakfast of his usual favourite porridge with all the trimmings. Michael threw in some strawberries as an extra treat.
I did the board and Fela was happy to play with his tongue drum with George Benson playing on youtube in the background. Around 11:00 Michael brought lickings from the mixing bowl as he was making muffins and cookies – Fela was delighted. We coincided this with his snack of a yogurt smoothie. Fela watched Breathe church service on youtube. As a filler before lunch, I played Michael Franks ‘Time Together’ album and offered Fela his old harmonica to play along. He seemed to really enjoy this, and I set the table as he played.
After lunch, Michael and I decided to change Fela’s bandage as he was picking at it and looked uncomfortable. It had also started dripping as lunch came to an end. He was a lot happier once this was done. I did the board and asked Fela whether he wanted to watch T.D. Jakes sermon. We started it, but half way through I decided to ask Fela if he wanted to lie down upstairs as he wasn’t focusing in the usual way. He went to the loo, then I prepared the settee for him and put on some relaxing background jazz. Fela was vocal for a while; all in all I think he may have slept for 30 – 40 minutes maximum. He was vocal after waking for 10 minutes whilst I prepared his fruit salad and some tea. I noticed that around the left eye seemed quite red and sore – it was clear that Fela was rubbing it. He seemed quite out of sorts. I wiped his eye with witchhazel solution then sliced a cucumber from the fridge and applied it to the front of his eye with a wound dressing. When it came off, Fela’s eye looked a lot better. We spoke to Nanna Hazel on the phone.
I did the board and asked Fela if he wanted to do colouring, cutting out or have a story read. He chose cutting out. I offered him magazine pages of people posing and smiling in group photos.
Fela ate his dinner at a slow pace as we have observed since his surgery. I did the board with Afterwards, Michael offered Fela a DVD – ‘the Queen’s Corgi’. He was intensely focused from the start. I went upstairs to do some Admin whilst Michael sat with him. When I came down to give him his kalms and snack, he looked a lot happier.
We left for his home just before 21:00 and he was in a happy mood. Teresa greeted us at he house and we had a quick handover before leaving them at 21:10.
*The breakthroughs of the day were using cucumber slices to soothe and reduce the puffiness around Fela’s left eye. I have left some cucumber wrapped in foil in the top shelf of the door of Fela’s fridge next to the lemon.
Also, I sprayed some Dettol spray on Fela’s bandage to counteract the odour. This helped a lot. Remember to ask him to close his eyes as you spray. The pink spray tube has been left in his brown toilettries bag.
