23/02/2021 – Morning shift – carla cornelius

Shift Report:

Michael collected Fela and brought him to Green Pastures around 9:30. It took him a while to take his outer clothes and shoes off as he was transfixed by things in the kitchen. I offered him a cup of tea, and he had it upstairs.

The plastic surgery consultant rang around 9:45 for the pre-arranged telephone consultation. he reported that the cryosurgery needles were expected to be delivered in two weeks. This is good news indeed! He said he will try to book a room elsewhere as all the hospital theatre rooms are designated for Covid patients.

Fela listened to ‘Tuesday morning jazz’ on youtube whilst I did some sewing repairs to his jogging trousers.

We left for Brough Park at 11:25 after Fela’s snack and packing a picnic basket. Michael and I had not explored the park before so we were surprised how big it was. Fela was distracted with signing for ‘lamb’ etc and it was quite windy. Plus Michael could only walk so much so we walked for only 25 minutes before Fela dragged me to the leisure centre to access the toilet. I’m surprised they let us in as it is now a Covid testing centre but I explained that Fela was desperate and wouldn’t take no for an answer.

We drove further into the countryside just beyond the roaches to find a scenic spot to have lunch in the car. Michael made us an amazing pasta salad with lots of goodness. Whilst driving in the countryside and as we approached Leek, Fela kept trying to get our attention whilst he was sitting in the back of the car. He was vocalising certain words over and over again, and we couldn’t make them out. We finally realised that he was requesting chicken sandwich and chips from the tearoom in Leek. He seemed satisfied and soon quietened once we figured it out. I told him he could go next week. Excellent speaking, Fela!

After driving through Staffordshire Moorlands including Longor and Bradnop we finally returned home at 13:30. Fela took a while to take his outer wear off again as he gets very distracted by the kitchen. He insisted I take the popcorn and walnut snack in the container upstairs as well as the cup of tea. He also requested juice and frogmarched me to the fridge. (I hid the popcorn snack for later). Michael came to use his ‘Boys Brigade’ voice and prompt Fela upstairs. It works like a charm! I asked Fela if he wanted his tops changing and he said ‘yes’ so I assisted him with this.

At the time of writing this report, Fela is sitting calmly on the sofa rubbing aloe vera leaf gelly on his face and enjoying the sensory feel of it. We are about to do some makaton signing, colouring and a story if he is up to them.
