25/09/2019 – Day & Evening shift – carla cornelius

Shift Report:

I greeted Fela on arrival, did the board and he seemed happy generally and with the activities. I showed him the ‘Yes/No’ cards and asked him whether he wanted to go cycling at Westport Lake. He chose yes, and this matched with his verbal ‘yes’ so I put it on the board.

There are 12 sentences expressing what Fela might want to communicate throughout the day. I went through each sentence with Fela, and we did the makaton signs for the ones I knew. I put the velcro on the back and created a PECS board which is on the fireplace wall to the left of the mantel within easy reach of Fela’s rocking chair. I will notify Andrew that they are there, and ask him to incorporate it into some of his education sessions so Fela can get used to using them.

Fela enjoyed cycling on the companion bike with Chloe and me – we took turns to either sit with him on the bike or ride a separate bike behind. We went around 4 times as Fela did not want to stop but the session had ended.

After lunch, we brought Fela to Green Pastures as Chloe had to leave early due to a family emergency. For the rest of the day, we played lots of card shuffling games with the two packs of cards we had. Fela takes it very seriously and seems to get a lot out of it. I would encourage all staff to do this with him as it seems to help him feel connected and mentally in charge.

I gave Fela a manicure. After dinner, we danced for about 40 minutes to Michael Bolton, Joe Cocker – “I get by with a little help from my friends” whilst doing the makaton sign for friends and Janet Jackson. For his evening snack, I brought the tempo down with some background hymns to help him relax and prepare for his evening routine. We took him back home at 9pm and Zoe was there to greet us. When we left, Fela was relaxing in the bath.

All in all, a positive day with no issues. Whenever I noticed Fela scratching his face persistently, I would either give him a cotton pad with witchhazel to rub with or a mini pot of aloe propolis/gel to apply. I think this helps him to cope better with the itching.
