28/12/2020 – Morning shift – carla cornelius

Shift Report:

Fela was having his supplements when I arrived. He seemed calm despite his interrupted sleep. Alicia arrived soon afterwards, and we had a quick handover. Alicia prompted him to take off his apron, and he went to sit in his rocking chair. He was content to listen to his soul Man CD.

Alicia did the board with him, but he was not keen on walk in the neighbourhood or walk at home. So, we decided to switch the afternoon activities to the morning. We hoped he would be more inclined to exercise in the afternoon. Alicia engaged him in some card counting, makaton weather signs e.g. wind, snow, rain, sunshine plus the sign of the day for walking. Fela was very good at counting 1-10 whilst they took turns dealing the cards, and doing the signs.

He listened to Phil Collins, then specifically chose Andre Rieu. Afterwards, he did some colouring of a Paddington Bear print-out. Alicia rewarded him with a sticker. Fela has been happy all day, and has communicated well with Alicia, signing to her for tea with lemon, honey and ginger on two occasions.

Fela ate lunch, and Michael arrived soon afterwards with the shopping. Teresa also arrived and helped to put away the shopping.

*It was a heroic day after we all woke up to snow and all the disruptions it caused. Thanks to Claire for staying on despite feeling exhausted until Alicia could come in. Thanks to Alicia for coming in early, and her husband who brought her in; this allowed Claire to leave and go home to get some rest. Thanks to Teresa for travelling through thick and thin from Crewe; she showed determination and resourcefulness. I’m writing this because it is a shining example of teamwork under difficult circumstances which is what 2020 has been all about. Well done all!
