‘Leaving Normal – the journey of a mother and son with autism’
In recognition of Fela graduating to become a young man – on his 18th Birthday Carla, his mum, published ‘Leaving Normal’ which charted her, and Fela’s first eighteen years. The high points, the lows and everywhere in between. Much laughter, joy and love but between these times of heartbreak, abandonment and rejection for them both.
A few days after his birth Carla, wrote him a letter, little did she know then just how prophetic it would be, Fela was three when he was diagnosed with autism.
She wrote: “… though you will face many difficulties and challenges, I will never leave nor abandon you.” She had no knowledge or understanding then of what was about to unfold in her life!
