05/07/2021 – Evening shift – carla cornelius

Shift Report:

Fela was very excited when he arrived at Green Pastures just before 17:00. He went upstairs to the loo, and kept asking for ‘5’ but then he left the loo to drag me downstairs to request yogurt by taking me to the fridge to get the tub out. He has never done this before – I had to redirect him upstairs to wash his hands.

In order to calm him down, and stop him from sweating, I prompted him to remove his hoodie on socks. The fan was on in my office upstairs. Then I did the board and was able to engage him in colouring two print-outs of drums. [One of his colourings was dated and pinned up on his education board when we took him to his home] Fela was given the pencil sharpener, and he fixated on one colour and was sharpening excessively. So I prompted him to use different colours with the second print-out. As he coloured, I was sewing some repairs on his green BHS shorts.

Fela really enjoyed his dinner of homemade pizza, chips and beans. I tried prompting him to rest his knife and fork on the side of the plate from time to time so he would slow down and take time to chew. He was still rushing but managed to do it from time to time. After dinner, I prompted him to put the BHs shorts on as the jogging trousers were making him too hot.

He was not keen on bouncing on the ball , but enjoyed listening to the pop music e.g. N’Sync, Backstreet Boys and Janet Jackson. He pointed to his tongue drum so I helped him open the bag so he could play on the tray. He really enjoyed playing for about 45 minutes. It was clear that Fela was remembering his reunion session of drumming with Dan this afternoon.

Nanna Hazel rang just before his snack so we were unable to speak to her but we will try to call her tomorrow. At least we know she is safe and well after the storm which affected Barbados over the weekend. Fela returned to his home just before 21:00 and was welcomed by Claire for the sleep shift. He was a lot calmer by then and was showing signs of fatigue.
